Focus on: Architecture

Architecture is the most perfect blend of art and science.  Architects dream big and design big – whether it’s a multi level museum or a high rise structure that’s in the heart of Chicago.  They must have insight and the ability to see how the drawings and blueprints translate into real life and steel, bricks and foundations. They appreciate the big picture while never missing the smallest detail.  They’re focused, educated and committed to perfection.  We asked A. Harrison Barnes, founder of EmploymentCrossing.com, for a more definitive idea of the responsibilities that come with being a professional architect.

“There’s a certain level of creativity involved”, says Barnes.  He also says a good architect is always aware of his budget, able to work with a wide array of people, from contractors to engineers to electricians and of course, he must be able to plan the completion while coordinating schedules with all of these other people involved in the project.  Communication skills are an absolute must and the architect must also remain current with zoning considerations since there is often millions of dollars at stake – and it’s always someone else’s millions.

Naturally, a degree is required.  A. Harrison Barnes explains the Architect Registration Examination is mandatory for licensing in every state.  There are excellent architectural programs in colleges around the country and your options are many.  For instance, some universities offer a five year program while others might offer a combination four year undergraduate with the two year master’s program.  Another important aspect of gaining the proper credentials is that the majority of states will require a successful internship before taking the licensing exam.  Further, depending on which state you choose to work in, you may be required to obtain continuing education hours on an annual basis.

Opportunities are plenty in terms of advancements.  Promotions to project manager and other positions with higher salaries are not uncommon in this field.  Architects can choose the private sector or those within local, state or even on the federal level; the potential certainly exists.

You’re going to be nervous.  You’re going to walk on eggshells an you’re going to want to impress your co-workers.  It’s just human nature.  If you acknowledge that to yourself before the workday even begins, you’re not going to fight it so much.  It’s natural to want to get along with your new co-workers, says the EmploymentCrossing.com founder.  You won’t be spending so much energy fighting it if you just allow yourself to be who you are.  Remember, everyone has had a “first day” on the job.

You’re going to make mistakes.  Face it – if you’re one of “us” (as in, “a human being”), you’re going to completely annihilate something at some time – and maybe even more than once.  Don’t be so hard on yourself.  It’s those mistakes that provide the most insight, after all.  When you forget the process for handling purchase orders, say so.  No one expects you to remember everything from the very beginning.

When those mistakes happen, own up to them.  Don’t make excuses and don’t try to hide it.  Acknowledge it – “I blew that one.  Can you tell me what I need to do before it goes for signature again?”

Another important tip A. Harrison Barnes offers is to not walk through the door, convinced you’re the “cure all”.  In other words, you might have some great ideas to make the company far more efficient, but if you show up and announce you’re there (even in your mannerisms) to “fix” the company, you’re not only going to get precious little support, but odds are, you’re also going to kick at least a few minds into high gear as they try to think of ways to get you out of there.  There’s plenty of time to make your suggestions.  Besides, you don’t know if the current methods are in place for very specific reasons.  It may appear to be a waste of time to hold off on approval codes until mid-month, but it could be they’re generated once a month and only come available one time on the 15th.  Things aren’t always as they seem.

Finally, don’t hesitate to ask for help.  One secretary remembers asking the same co-worker three times which printer setting was the one to use.  “I knew it was a simple process, but for the life of me, I could not remember it!”  Her co-worker, she says, was gracious and patient with her as she learned the ropes.  It’s a slow dance, this new job business; but once you’ve mastered it, you’re going to find a lot to love about your new employer and your co-workers.  Getting over the hurdle allows you to really grow into a new position.

When the Layoffs Hit Close to Home

Folks are still receiving the pink slips and while the news out of Washington can be confusing in terms of whether the economy’s actually recovering or not, odds are, it’s affected you on a personal level over the past few years.  One of those areas that it might have affected you and your household is the lay off of a spouse.  It’s difficult enough on a family, but if it’s your husband or wife, you have a full plate with covering the financial bases while also reassuring them that it’s going to be OK.  You want to support him or her, but practicalities must also be dealt with.  We asked A. Harrison Barnes, career coach and EmploymentCrossing.com founder his ideas for navigating those tricky waters that include your better half and a lay off.  Here’s what he had to say:

Be sure to let your spouse know you’re right there with them.  Provide the obligatory shoulder to cry on and then get down to the practical aspects.  Was there a severance package involved and if so, the two of you will need to sit down and determine what’s next, especially when it comes to medical insurance and 401(k) plans.

Up next, you may need to take a realistic look at the bank balances.  Have automated payments that come out each month based on your now unemployed spouse’s pay periods?  Don’t waste another second with cancelling those scheduled debits.  Even one fee the bank will charge for the convenience of pulling money from your savings account to cover the payment can be substantial – especially with a reduced income.

Don’t forget to file for unemployment.  If you’re the computer whiz in the family, take matters into your own hands and get the ball rolling by filing online.  If you’re like many Americans and are already living payday to payday, wasting a single day can create havoc for your family.

If needed, sit down with the children and explain to them things are going to be different for a while.  Determine what’s age appropriate for your own children and explain to them it’s just part of life, but that they remain top priority for mom and dad.  This would be a good time to announce the trip to Disney World has been postponed, too, says A. Harrison Barnes.  Remember to explain to them it’s not cancelled; it’s just pushed back a bit until things get better.

Finally, keep the lines of communication open.  There’s a good chance the blues will set in and if that happens, it can throw a wrench into how fast your family recovers from the job loss.  Times like these can really test a marriage, says the EmploymentCrossing.com founder, but it’s crucial you come together as a team and work to put it behind you so that you can get back to the business of better living.

Five Easy Changes to Make to Your Resume Right Now

Have you ever wondered if interviewers grow weary of the predictable resumes; sorting through a pile of consistent pages that include common phrases, such as, “my duties consisted of” or “reason for leaving”? And if so, have you found yourself falling into that category anyway just because you’re not sure how to “shake it up”? We’ve provided articles in the past with useful tips on how to do just that. That said, we’ve put together five sure fire changes you can make right now to your resume that might can be the difference of getting a job or getting relegated to the manila folder in the file cabinet that reads, “Potential” or “Resumes to keep for future interest”.

We asked A. Harrison Barnes, career coach and founder of Hound.com his thoughts on those overused phrases. He agreed there are those catchphrases that can make an interviewer’s skin crawl. So, in lieu of those worn out verbs and adjectives, here are a few that can easily be replaced and that will provide a fresher feel to your resume:

  • Instead of “implemented”, try accelerated, accomplished, launched or optimized.
  • Instead of “coordinated”, go for some originality with analyzed, orchestrated, motivated or spearheaded.
  • Drop the “responsibilities included” and instead, go for structured, expedited, functioned as, or standardized.

Another tip the Hound.com founder offered is one we should all be doing anyway, but for some reason, seldom do as evidenced by the countless mistakes recruiters report. That tip is to double check and proofread every single word. Got it perfect? Good – now triple check it and proofread it again. Ask a friend or family member to give it the once-over, too.

While all of those abbreviations might look impressive, keep in mind, not every recruiter or interviewer knows what they mean. Spell them out in the first reference, and then, if you use them again in the resume, you can include them in abbreviation form. Much like the way you cited college papers, this tip will keep a streamlined reading process for anyone considering you for an interview.
Why folks still believe it’s acceptable to add cutesy graphics is beyond understanding. Please, save those creative energies for your weekend bar-b-que e-vites. Avoid the graphics in your resume. It’s a sure-fire way to not get a call.

Finally, keep your efforts honest. It is way too easy to verify even the tiniest details on a resume these days. A little white lie serves no good purpose in a job hunt. Just the facts, please.

Receiving Criticism from the Boss

There are few things worse than being on the wrong end of criticism. When it’s the boss doling it out, many would far prefer walking over coals than having to hear what he has to say. It doesn’t have to be that way, says A. Harrison Barnes, founder of EmploymentCrossing.com. “If a supervisor is taking the time to point out areas an employee can improve, it means he has a vested interest in seeing that employee succeed”. If we can only keep that in mind during the meeting, odds are, we’ll be far better served and will be able to take that criticism and learn from it.

Most employees will agree that anytime they’ve listened to criticism from a manager, it’s done in a respectful way with tact. The goal is hearing what’s being said instead of looking for the nearest escape route. There are a few things you can do, both during and after your meeting, that will tell your supervisor that you’ve heard what he has to say and that you appreciate the feedback. Here are a few tips to keep in mind, courtesy of A. Harrison Barnes:

  • Your first instinct will be to argue your point. It’s important to resist that urge for a few reasons. First, you’re closing down and not hearing what’s being said, but more importantly, you’re saying, in essence, that you don’t trust the messenger. This will almost always put your supervisor on defense and this serves no good purpose.
  • Keep eye contact, as difficult as it is. This allows your supervisor to say what needs to be said and you don’t feel it’s being dragged out because he wonders if you’re hearing what he’s saying.
  • Keep your calm, says the EmploymentCrossing.com founder. If you’re upset, keep in mind that you’ll have an opportunity to have your say. If possible, warns Barnes, try to schedule a follow up so that you don’t allow your emotions to take over. If your supervisor asks what your thoughts are after he’s finished the review, ask if it’s possible to take a step back and meet the next morning. It’s OK to say, “Honestly, I’m feeling a bit vulnerable right now and I’d really appreciate the opportunity to sleep on it and consider what you said”. Odds are, he’ll agree to that and will be sensitive to your feeling of being exposed.
  • Agree or disagree, be sure to thank your supervisor for his time. Tell him it’s a lot to consider, but your priority is to be the best you can be in your role. This fosters goodwill and allows you to keep your dignity and pride in tact. It’s easy to unintentionally become your own worst enemy, so the dignified approach is always best.

Remember too that you’re human and imperfect. Your boss is likely as uncomfortable as you. After all, he’s probably on the hot seat as often as those who work for him. As long as you’re being treated with respect, your best bet is to hear what he has to say.

Breaking the Ice in Business Meetings

As a manager, you have certain responsibilities, one of which might be to lead a group of sales people through a marketing or sales seminar. These sales folks may come from several different districts or may not know one another well. One sure fire way to break the proverbial ice, says Barnes, is to tell them in your opening remarks that you’re aware they don’t know one another well, but that they’re here because of the company’s faith in them and that you’re sure by the time the seminar wraps up, not only will they know each other better, but that you also predict a dynamic group that has a lot to offer by the end of the day (or week or weekend) as a team.
Suggest they break off into teams of 2, 3 or more people for quick brainstorming sessions. Allow them to choose those they partner with and let the creative energy flow says the EmploymentCrossing.com founder. Never underestimate the power when creative minds come together.

Make it a challenge for your group by offering a nice incentive, says A. Harrison Barnes. “Offer to take the winning team to lunch next week or have your public relation’s team make several gift packages with coupons for free dinners in their regions, promotional products such as ball caps, coffee tumblers and golf balls and if you’re involved with the community and with other business owners, that’s a good time to toss in a free oil change from one of the businesses in your area”.
Get the creativity started by going over some of the thoughts upper management had tossed around in the past and see what kind of new and energized ideas come from your group.

Always ask for their feedback. You want to gather information to take back to home office, right? That fact gathering exercise should include more than just their ideas on how to grow the business. You want to know what’s already working and more importantly, what’s not working. Give your sales team a voice and then sit back and listen. You might be amazed at what you discover.

Finally, reiterate to each of the attendees that you have an open door policy and are always ready to hear anything they have to say. Fostering a relationship with your sales team is important; after all, they’re the ones who are talking to the clients on a daily basis and they’re the ones who know, even better than the president, a winning combination when they see one.
